Velebit Nature Park The entire mountain region of Velebit extends from Senj to the Zrmanja River north of Knin at approximately 150 km in length and up to 30 km wide.

In Velebit Nature Park lie to the north of the National Park Northern Velebit and Paklenica National Park in the middle of the massif. Deep gorges and rocky landscapes and its animal and plant life with dense forests characterize the image of the mountain Velebit.

With more than 2,000 square kilometers of the Velebit Nature Park is by far the largest nature reserve area in Croatia, larger than all other protected areas taken together. Within the nature park is a whole range of smaller protected areas, including two national parks Northern Velebit and Paklenica, and the strict reserves Hajdučki and Rožanski kukovi. On this magnificent mountain that in its diversity, unique relief and its rich flora and fauna of the most important in Europe, there is a whole series of natural sights ranking among the highest values Croatia has to offer.

That's why this whole 150 km long mountain is protected and was declared a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve, currently the only one in Croatia. The Velebit forms an air barrier between the Mediterranean climate and the mountain climate inland.

The huge nature park has a lot of interesting attractions and outdoor adventures to offer. The Carovacke Caves, which are considered the most beautiful in Croatia, can be found near Gracac, which lies on the road between Plitvice and Zadar. The two superposed cave formations at the northern foot of the Velebit mountain range impress through spatial sequences and the beautiful, diverse Tropfsteinbehang. A guided tour through the caves takes about 2 - 3 hours.

Geography

With 145 km length of Velebit is the longest of Dinara massif. The width of the Velebit is between 10 to 30 km, the total area about nature park Velebit 4 2200 km2.

There Getting

The easiest way you can find the nature park about Otocac. The city can be reached on the Zagreb-Split highway. Then follow the road to Krasno and finds the administrative building of the Natural Park. For those who prefer road, adheres towards Josipdol and continue to Senj over the Kapela pass.
