Punat was first mentioned in 1480 as Villa di Ponte. For centuries local farmers lived of trading with figs, olives and wine. The oil mill from the 18th Century is the oldest building in Punat. The Trinity Church dating back to 1773 was renovated in 1934. A specialty of the region is the monastery island Kosljun. The local Franciscan monastery has for centuries among many religious, ethnographic and natural history preserved an extensive collection of over 20,000 old and rare books. The island of Krk was inhabited during the Roman period and the remains of the monastery can still be seen today. The monastery also houses a museum where some archaeological artifacts are on display.
